The Fruit Stall Program

Description:

As an extension to the integrated unit of work “The Shopping Basket” based on the book of the same title by John Burningham, students run a weekly Fruit Stall. Students have opportunities to develop specific number skills such as counting, numeral recognition and number relationships in functional ways in conjunction with knowledge gained from the book.

The program will allow students to become familiar with money regardless of their number knowledge and allow them to access and experience the monetary world. Students will develop the skill of handling money, enabling them to participate more fully in community outings, decision making, their own care and the care of others. They will practice tendering money in a classroom context and be exposed to reading prices of meaningful items with appropriate objects and visuals.
